This page gives a brief explanation about the alphabet used in SIL publications in the Mixtec language spoken in San Juan Mixtepec, Oaxaca.


Notes about the alphabet

Most of the sounds of Mixtepec Mixtec are similar to those of Spanish, and they are written with the same letters. However, there are some sounds which do not exist in Spanish. Some letters are the same letters in Spanish but their sounds are different. These letters are:

Long vowels:

      aa staa tortilla tortilla
      ee skee harvesting corn pizcando
      ii nikanchii sun zorra
      oo koo snake culebra
      uu yuu rock piedra


Nasal vowels:

      an xi'an hawk gavilán
      en teen sweating sudando
      in pain shawl rebozo
      on sachoon we work trabajamos
      un tuun charcoal carbón


Glottalized vowels:

      a'a nta'a hand mano
      e'e ve'e house casa
      i'i nti'i skin eruption grano
      o'o ko'o dish plato
      u'u ku'u herb hierba
